Gimle – Competition

A student community at the edge of the forest

The small student houses are compact two-story volumes shaped as crosses in plan, allowing all units to receive natural light from two sides. Built entirely in CLT (cross-laminated timber), the design optimizes panel dimensions to minimize waste and simplify construction. Natural materials are used throughout, creating a warm, tactile environment with a low carbon footprint.

Each house contains a shared two-level core with an open staircase that doubles as seating, leading to a dining area and directly out to a communal outdoor space. Extra ceiling height makes the compact units feel spacious, allowing for loft beds and clear separation between rest and study zones. The houses offer a strong connection to the surrounding forest while supporting both social interaction and personal privacy.
